Black History Month: Race and Disability
This is a great opportunity to learn about the Intersection of race and disability. As a teacher, parent, and friend, with the inspiration of Black History Month, I want to learn about the experiences of Black people with disabilities and the families who care for them.
I acknowledge my own privilege. I acknowledge that without speaking openly with friends and family who are racialized I would not see the prejudice and the barriers they face. This is why, when seeking to support children with disabilities, I feel that it is paramount to explore this intersectional experience of being Black and disabled.
Below are some links I am collecting throughout the month of February (and beyond) about the experiences of Black families with children who have special needs and Black people with disabilities.
